Georgia Attorney General Requests U.S. Department of Justice To Take Over Ahmaud Arbery Investigation

The State of Georgia’s Attorney General has officially petitioned the United States Dept. Of Justice (DOJ) to conduct an inquiry as to how the Ahmaud Arbery case was handled from the onset by Glynn County, GA officials. a 25-year-old Arbery was fatally killed in an ambush style attack on 2/23/2020.  However, no arrests were made in the matter until a video of the incident went viral on 5/5.  On 5/7 father and son Gregory and Travis McMichael were arrested and charged with murder.

As we reported previously a conflict of interest appears to be at hand in the case of Glynn County (Georgia) District Attorney Jackie Johnson and the McMichaels. Gregory McMichael was previously employed for Johnson as an investigator in the D.A.’s office. Johnson later withdrew from her responsibilities as the D.A. handling the investigation due to a conflict of interest but this only came about after the video surfaced and initially blocking the arrest of both father and son McMichaels.

The request to the DOJ includes an investigation into the discussions between the offices of Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorney Jackie Johnson and Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney George E. Barnhill. Barnhill would also withdraw himself form the investigation but only after, as first reported by the New York Times, claiming that there was not enough probable cause to arrest the McMichaels.

Then, in a bizarre incident which further highlights how badly the case has been mishandled by Glynn County officials the National District Attorneys Association (NDAA)issued a statement disagreeing with Barnhill’s decision to offer his opinion of whether the father and son McMichaels should be arrested after he withdraw himself from the case. The NDAA is a national organization who’s“mission is to be the voice of America’s prosecutors and to support their efforts to protect the rights and safety of the people.” Basically, a national organization representing prosecutors has come out and vocally reprimanded the prosecutors handling the Arbery murder investigation.

We’ll have more info on this matter as the details become available.
