District Attorney Blocked Arrests in Shooting Death of Ahmaud Arbery

Details in the case of Ahmaud Arbery continue to surface in tidbits as the investigation into the jogger’s death continues and now news has surfaced noting that the office of Glynn County (Georgia) District Attorney Jackie Johnson refused to allow arrests to be made in the case of Arbery’s shooting death.

Johnson reportedly would not allow the arrests related to Arbery to protect her former colleague Gregory McMichael. Gregory is the 64-year-old father who used to work for Johnson as an investigator in Johnson’s office. Glynn County Commissioner J. Peter Murphy said in a conversation that he found out DA Jackie Johnson reportedly blocked an investigator with the Glynn County PD from both father and son McMichael on the day the shooting took place. Murphy stated, “Basically [the investigator] was told to stand down, i.e., there are to be no arrests today.”

News surfaced afterwards suggesting that DA Jackie Johnson recused herself from the case of Ahmaud Arbery, essentially meaning that Johnson withdrew herself from the case because of a potential conflict of interest or lack of impartiality.

Another District Attorney named George Barnhill was assigned to the Arbery case after Johnson recused herself but D.A. Barnhill did the same thing because Arbery’s mother reportedly found out Barnhill’s son worked for the same officer that McMichael worked at. Since the news surfaced, Jackie Johnson has denied blocking arrests of McMichael and his son.
