U.S. Government Somehow Lists Wakanda As a Free-Trade Partner

The stuff governments do wrong should be turned into a must-read school book. On a funnier note, the federal government of the United States recently listed the fictional African country ‘Wakanda’ as a free-trade partner. According to the US government, “Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) have proved to be one of the best ways to open up foreign markets to U.S. exporters. Trade Agreements reduce barriers to U.S. exports, and protect U.S. interests and enhance the rule of law in the FTA partner country.”

The fictional African nation of Wakanda from the Marvel film ‘Black Panther,’ according to a recent USDA tariff tracker list, enjoyed free-trade status with the United States. The fictional country was eventually removed after the ridicule of the Internet went viral.

The USDA claim that the fictional nation was added to the list in July as a test and wasn’t removed after testing. A spokesperson for the USDA stated, “The Foreign Agricultural Service staff who maintain the Tariff Tracker have been using test files to ensure that the system is running properly…The Wakanda information should have been removed after testing and has now been taken down.”
