Diddy’s Paid Sting $2,000 Daily For Failing To Clear Sample; Payments End in 2053

For us as music fans, we just want to hear good music and most of us are willing to support our favorite music artists. What we feel to understand is the backend of thing, i.e., the music business. During the Golden Era of Hip-Hop, namely 1990-1997 (up until the time Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G were killed), sampling previous music was a major source of inspiration for plenty of rap beats. By and large, most producers tapped into Mo Town’s greatest hits for their sampling purposes. Upon Biggie Smalls passing away in March 1997, Diddy (then known as Puff Daddy) sampled Sting’s “Every Breath You Take” without receiving permission first and this would end up costing Bad Boys Record Label turned Revolt TV executive big time.

XXL reports that Diddy must pay Sting $2,000/ daily until 2053. Sting was born in 1951 so unless he can live to 102 years old his estate will take over collection of payments. In another case more recently, JUICE WRLD also had an issue where the late artist sampled Sting’s ‘Shape of My Heart’ for the track ‘Lucid Dreams.’ In a recent interview with Billboard following Juice WRLD’s sudden death, Sting stated he has zero plans of suing Juice WRLD’s estate telling the publication these assumptions are “simply untrue.” The British rocker went on to state,

“This is such a tragic loss for the world of music, a young life with so much potential and a unique and precious talent,” the rock icon tells Billboard. “‘Lucid Dreams’ was my favorite of all the many interpolations of ‘Shape of My Heart,’ it will resonate for many years to come. My sincere condolences to the family.”

He even posted a condolence tribute to the late rapper,

“Tragic loss of a talented artist @juicewrld999 My thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Unfortunately for Diddy this isn’t the case. The Harlem-bred mogul will have to continue to pay Sting $730,000 for the next 33 years.
