Black-Owned Business Featured in Target AD Hit w/ Bad Reviews Because They Want To ‘Empower Black Girls’

A Black-owned business is currently being subjected to a wave of negative online reviews after the company’s founder, Beatrice Dixon, was featured in a Target advertisement, where she said she hoped her success could pave the way for Black girls. Dixon specifically states,

“The reason why it’s so important for Honey Pot to do well is so that the next Black girl that comes up with a great idea, she can have a better opportunity. That means a lot to me.”

It’s important to note that overall, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce, minority-owned firms make up 15 percent of U.S businesses and generate 3 percent of all total income. Minority-owned businesses are those owned by Black-Americans, Hispanics, Asians and Pacific Islanders, or American Natives and Alaska Natives. In other words, of all the revenue generated by American business only 3% is made by a minority-owned business. White-owned American business make up 97% of total income generation even though, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, White-Americans comprise 76% of the U.S. Population.

In this context, is the anger aimed at Beatrice Dixon justified?
