MS-13 Member Sentenced to 25 Years in Prison for Unthinkable Murder

Miguel Lopez Abrego, 22, took part in a heinous crime in nearly three years ago during March 2017. He and two accomplices transported an 18-year-old male to a freshly dug up grave before they choked him until the 18-year-old victim passed out Afterwards, Abrego and the two other accomplices took turns slashing the victim with machetes and knives until he died. Then they severed the victim’s head, ripped out his heart and tossed his dismembered body parts into the grave. The incident took place in Wheaton Regional Park in Silver Spring, MD which is located approximately 11 miles north of Washington D.C.

All three defendants belonged to the Mara Salvatrucha street gang (aka MS-13). Abrego was the first defendant sentenced for the brutal killing receiving 25-years behind steel bars. The sentence was jointly recommended by prosecutors and Abrego’s defense lawyer. Before the sentencing, U.S. District Judge James Bredar stated, “The crime was unspeakable in its violence and savagery,”

In December, we reported about 96 MS-13 members being arrested as part of the “largest takedown in [New York] state history.” Read about that here.

A May 2019 indictment charged 22 members and associates of MS-13 “cliques” in Maryland in at least six murders, five attempted murders, a string of assaults, drug trafficking and other crimes. What this implies is that Federal authorities are heavily monitoring gang activity on the East Coast. This isn’t only limited to MS-13 activity. In March 2017 the FEDZ busted an operation in New York City in connection with the Bloods. The operation reached as far West as Arizona (see here).
