A 23-year-old convicted child molester previously named Joseph Smith was released from prison after changing his gender via surgery while incarcerated. The Iowa Attorney General’s office states Smith is no longer a public menace due to identifying as a woman.
Smith was imprisoned in 2014 after reportedly molesting 15 children ranging in age from 1 to 15. Along with that, Smith reportedly touched a high school student. Attorney General Lynn Hicks addressed the matter by Smith’s new first name ‘Josie,’ stating,
“an offender’s hormone levels are an important part of substantiating an offender’s likelihood of recidivism. We don’t believe we have evidence sufficient to prove Josie Smith has a significant chance of reoffending.”
Smith reportedly received treatment for the gender change while serving time at the Newton Correctional Prison over the course of two years.
