China reported zero new cases of COVID-19 infections today (3/19) in Wuhan since the start of the global “coronavirus pandemic.” The virus, which is believed to have started in Wuhan, has left 80,000 Chinese people sickened and over 3,000 persons dead. Epidemiologists are warning, however, that a second wave of infections could rise considering historical patterns of previous pandemics.
The coronavirus is more difficult to detect and lingers longer than other viruses in the past, including SARS, which infected 8,000 people before fading out. Globally, the coronavirus has sickened over 211,000 and killed 8,700.
At this point everyone is cautioned to take what any government reports with a grain of salt. China does not have a free media capable of reporting on the country’s domestic affairs as they are. In the United States, the major (i.e., mainstream) media outlets are notorious for toeing the U.S Establishment’s thinking on foreign policy. What’s known is that the world is experiencing multiple conflicts including a now long-standing currency war. In addition, over the past few weeks, it seems as though an oil war has picked up between Russia and Saudi Arabia. The way the world’s geopolitical axises are structured today it’s very reasonable to assume that Russia and China are strategic allies. China has been accused by the U.S of devaluing its currency since shortly after the 9/11 attacks. Saudi Arabia’s insistence on increasing oil production at this time should be seen in the greater geo strategic context of its alliance with the United Staes. Same with Russia, its part in the oil price war with Saudi should be seen in the context of its strategic relationship with China. The observer should be cautious to draw conclusions however there’s clearly much more than meets the eye taking place in today’s global climate.
